The structural engineer will survey the site of a proposed building or non-building structure. He or she will evaluate the type of soil and the elevation of the area to determine whether or not the project is viable. His or her findings are communicated to the architect and other members of the design team. 


A structural engineer is critical in the design of buildings. He or she will calculate the load that a proposed structure will bear to help determine how deep the foundation will go and how high the building should be. The engineer will also recommend what kind of building materials will be used to ensure that the building is strong. 


During the construction phase, the structural engineer will take up a management role. He or she will supervise the contractor to ensure that design specifications are followed. Also, the engineer will regularly communicate with the architect and local authorities to resolve any issues that arise during construction. 

If you would like to become a structural engineer, then you require the following skills:

  1. Communication skills as you will have to talk to the architect, homeowners and local authorities.
  2. Problem-solving skills as your work involves finding solutions to building problems.
  3. Time management skills. You must respect the various project deadlines to ensure that the project is complete within the specified time limit.
  4. Critical thinking skills are essential as well for a structural engineer. You must employ your creativity and learned theories to ensure that buildings can withstand all types of forces and natural occurrences.
  5. Analytical skills. Structural engineering revolves around the application of both mathematical and physics theories.

Job outlook

As a structural engineer, you can be employed in the public or private sector. Some structural engineers choose to specialise in specific fields. For instance, some specialise in building construction while others specialise in the construction of bridges. Structural engineers are also involved in the design of aircraft, vehicles and ships. Regardless of where you choose to specialise, you will mainly be involved in design and management.
